Being the host of the yearly Loy Kratong festival, Wat Saket temple with its golden chedi used to be the highest point in Bangkok. Nowadays, tourists can admire breathtaking views from the viewing point in the temple. Tracing back to the Ayutthaya times, during which it bore the name of Wat Sakae, the temple was refurbished by Rama I in the late 18th century.

Just by looking at the picture or its outside structure, you'll have a great idea why a travel agency in Thailand has it on their top itineraries.

The main function of the temple was cremation, originally not allowed within the city walls. During the early 19th century King Rama II’s reign, 29’000 bodies were cremated here.

The temple rests on an artificial hill ordered to be built by King Rama III (first half of 19th century). The early attempts to construct the temple were futile, because the soil was not stable enough, and hence, the area first had to be stabilized.
