Koh Tarutao

Satun is a southern province recognized mainly by travelers for its impressive and only occasionally visited islands, specifically Koh Lipe and Koh Tarutao.

Satun is situated in the distant south of Thailand, approximately 1000 kilometers away from Bangkok. Many of the provincial landscapes are in mountainous and the coastal region offer more than 60 islands. As Satun borders with Malaysia, a greater number of Satun’s community is Muslim, most of whom are from Malaysian origin. Luckily, for the people of Satun and visitors to the place, Satun has avoided the domestic uneasiness in some of Thailand’s southern provinces and is a tranquil and peaceful place to visit. It surely gives travelers the peace they want on their vacation in Thailand.

The Ko Tarutao Marine National Park consists of the several untouched wild islands on the Andaman Sea; all immerse in copious vegetations and bounded by unimaginative, magnificent tropical beaches. Adventurous travelers will be satisfied with the teeming exotic wildlife of the park.

Satun town, the province’s heart, is a dormant town that only few travelers visit, most of which on their way to the seaward islands or Malaysia. Nevertheless, capital Satun does present the Thale Ban National Park which consists of waterfalls and a huge lagoon encompassed by high reaching mountains.


From the harbor town in Pakbara, the best islands area in Satun are Koh Tarutao and Koh Lipe, extremely pleasant and mostly unspoiled islands distinguished for their astonishing pure and clean surroundings. Other islands consist of Koh Bulon Lae, Koh Adang and Koh Petra National Marine Park.

Satun was, formerly part of an independent Sultanate. Combined marriages between Thais and Malay Muslims have been usual for centuries; most Satun people are Samsam, signifying a combined person. While many native of Satun, involving most Samsams, are Muslims, Satun has preventing the regional disturbance that is happening in other southern provinces.
